Camille Saint-Saëns composed new unaccompanied songs with a traditional device rediscovered in the 19th century: unaccompanied polyphony and harmonies based on masters of ancient music. “Calme des nuits” is written in homophony. This is a beautiful song with rich harmonies and an incredible balance between music and poetry.
