Andrejs Jurjans was a composer who really liked popular music. He was one of the founders of Latvian classical music. He taught music theory at Kharkiv National Kotlyarevsky University of Arts from 1882 to 1916. He was a horn player and an organist and kept deep connections with his home country. He collected a total of 2,700 popular songs. He passed away in September 1922, in Riga.
