The only existing source even mentions “Josquin d’Ascanio.” In 1490, Josquin des Prés worked for the Cardinal Ascanio Sforza. This song may be a reference to Carlo Grillo, who was a singer in chapel Galeazzo Maria Sforza. He met Josquin des Prés around 1470. The imitation of the cricket is created by the quick delivery and the call and response sung by two voices. The satirical aspect requires a flowing and funny interpretation, similar to the comedia dell’arte. This is also a tradition for carnival songs.
