MAGNIFICAT by Giovanni ANIMUCCIA, restitution by Jacques Barbier for four mixed voices a cappella :
This Italian composer (1500-1571), a contemporary of Palestrina's, made a career in Rome and leaves us a diversified work, today unjustly ignored, and which departs from the conventions of the official music of the papal entourage.
This is evidenced by this short Magnificat, ideally for four mixed voices, which proposes, in the course of its six polyphonic verses, very different climates by the mere fact of a constant renewal of the writing: imitative cells (v.1), syllabic writing (v.3), writing in false drone (v.5), verse 7 in three voices contrasting with the denser verse 9 and its cantus firmus in the second voice before the playful ternary of verse 11.
A magnificat for four mixed voices choir (SATB), without any difficulty for the interpreters .
This will allow these 6 small polyphonic jewels to be placed in the plainchant of the even verses.
