Black Madonnas are effigies of Virgin Mary mostly sculpted and painted between the 11th and the 15th centuries. The Catholic Church explains that the only explanation to their color is an extract from The Song of Songs. Many composers of the Renaissance were devoted to Virgin Mary, and it appeared through several compositions like this original version set to music by Andréas de Silva. He was a contemporary cantor to Josquin Desprez and worked in Sistine Chapel. The repeated plainsong in long sections is sung by the alto, the two upper and lower voices sing short arabesques in imitation. |
