| | This cantata can be performed by two or three mixed voice choirs, narrators and optional melodic instrument accompaniments (violin or clarinet for example). The story is told by Charlemagne’s nephew Roland. He is the rearguard military leader crossing the Pyrenees. He is already thinking about coming back to France. He is proud and self-confident, but crossing the symbolic mountain will lead him from the climax of his power to his death. The sheet music lasts about 45 minutes.

| | These songs can be easily performed by every choir and particularly by the beginners. The approach of the polyphony is easy, and the essence of the melody is respected. “Le bonhomme” is a part-song which seems to follow a kind of increasing traditional ribaldry. “L’ânesse est tombée en fossé” is a 3-part mixed voices song based on a popular tradition in which the attorney, the vicar, and all public figures are helping a dying donkey. Both songs are easy to set to music and have lyrics sometimes a little coarse, and every choir can perform it.
