This sheet music was arranged for sopranos, altos and male voices. The lyrics are based on Ash Wednesday’s mass (psalms 102 and 78). The original version is intended for sopranos, tenors and basses. The third voice would be great for baritones.

This is a swinging song which has been written by the two major figures Henri Salvador and Boris Vian. Henri Salvador has written those words about it: “En Amérique, on écrit des negro-spirituals, mon ami Boris Vian et moi nous avons écrit un franco-spiritual…” (“American people usually write Negro spirituals and so me and my friend Boris Vian we have written a Franco spiritual…”). The whole song is summed up with this joke. Daniel Bonnet harmonized it with a swinging atmosphere that was loved by Henri Salvador (onomatopoeia, hands clapping and movements). The different voices take a part of the melody (sopranos, altos and men). As a result there is a simple, “jazzy” and accessible arrangement.
