| | |  Anne of Brittany was an incredible sovereign for the artists of her time. She was a musician and twice queen consort of France and she protected the singers, the instrumentalists, the poets and the painters. They celebrated her with texts and musics. “Fière Atropos” is one of the texts written to pay her a tribute when she died on January 1514. Pierre Moulu worked for Anne of Brittany in Langeais when she married Charles VII of France. He added a fifth voice to the polyphony, a section of a Latin text and an extract from the psalm 143 in long sections. He transposed every voice to the upper octave. The composer wanted very deep ranges but he also wanted to highlight the gravity of the text. This funeral motet was divided into two parts. He wanted to highlight the suffering aspect of the life so empty without the noble lady mourned by the whole country. |
