Neujahrslied (opus 88, n°1, 1844)“Neujahrslied” was composed on August 8, 1844. It is the last part of a cycle six songs for mixed voices based on poems written by Johann Peter Hebel, Joseph Freiherr von Eichendorff, Ludwig Uhland, Heinrich Schütz, and Emanuel Geibel from 1839 to 1844. This beautiful song is sophisticated but with no real difficulty and it can be played by every choir. Johann Peter Hebel was born in Basel. In 1791, he became a teacher at Karlsruhe American High School. His two major works are “Allemannische Gedichte” and “L’écrin de l’ami rhénan” are parts from the universal literature. He inspired many musicians.
