Nous vous prions, MarieThis song is based on “Romancero de Champagne.” It was adapted and arranged by Bernard Lallement. The melody is very famous but better known as “Noël des Enseignes” of which a short version is published on page 2. Chanoine Nioullon suggested some verses which first notes are “Dans la nuit froide et sombre.” Thanks to this short sheet music, you can suggest several texts.

Now is the month of mayingThe Italian villanelles and madrigals were famous in England by the end of the 16th century. It inspired the composers who composed songs with a particular energy. This genre was named “Elizabethan music.” They were often based on a short text with rural connotations. “Dansons le mai” (ref. ACJ 604) is the French arrangement by César Geoffray composed of three French stanzas and one English stanza.

Now, o now I needs must partThe Elizabethan madrigal had the characteristics of the English popular poetry of the 16th century, but was also influenced by Italian literature and music. John Dowland’s poetry is melancholic and desperate. The context is quite morbid, and the composer used two different polyphonic patterns. The homophony enhances the quiet and peaceful aspect of the 6/8 times. The rhythm of a lullaby is similar to the idealised vision of death. This is an easy sheet music to sing. However, you should be careful to sing long sections correctly and right to the end. The rhythm of the penultimates measures of each part have to be accurate for the hemiola. Be careful to the ancient spelling like “I needs” instead of “I need.”
