This cantata is intended to be performed by a standard mixed choir and a piano or a woodwind orchestra (piccolo, two flutes, oboe, bassoon, one desk with Bb clarinet, one desk with two Bb clarinets, a bass clarinet, two alto saxophones, a tenor saxophone, a baritone saxophone, a desk of two Bb trumpets, another desk of Bb trumpets, an F horn, a trombone, a Bb tuba, a bass tuba, double bass, timbales and drums).
“The evening promises to be calm. I’m gonna drink a cup of chamomile tea before going to sleep. I’m already falling asleep slowly. Dreams and nightmares come one after another in a continuing ballet which only ends at dawn. When I awake, I wake up my body as well, step by step. I get busy preparing the party I organize for my friends. Now, everybody’s here so… champagne!”
Two versions are available. The first version is only accompanied on a lone piano. It highlights the fine interpretation of the choir. This is perfect for small vocal groups. The second version is to be performed with a woodwind orchestra. You’ll need a big choir and an orchestra comfortable with nuances. That would transform this sheet music into a great choir-orchestra duet.
