 This beautiful piece was created by the youth national choir and the conductor Christine Morel. Francis Poulenc was a pianist and a French composer. He was a part from the “Groupe des Six.” The “Groupe des Six” was a group composed of several composers, the poet and writer Jean Cocteau, Arthur Honegger and Darius Milhaud. “La tragique histoire du petit René” is extracted from the collection “Quatre chansons pour enfants” by Jean Nohain, set to music by Francis Poulenc in 1934. As the melodic line is quite simple, the performer has to mime and play this tragic story. This song is written in a cabaret style. Jean Nohain’s comic text is enhanced by Francis Poulenc’s harmonies and by a spirited melody based on popular melodies. The song was firstly written for piano-vocals, and it was arranged for four mixed voices.
