This is the 6th extract from the Vespers, op. 37. Serge Rachmaninov was impressed by the incredible choirs he used to hear during religious services into Saint-Pétersbourg’s Orthodox Church. The Vespers is the prayer said before Sundays and great religious celebrations. Playing emigrant composers’ music was prohibited by the Soviet anti-religious politic; the Vespers were forgotten for a while. Church music was rediscovered during Perestroïka. This song can be performed by the major part of the choirs.
