Antoine de Bertrand’s songs reinforce the link between music and poetry that was enhanced in the second half of the 16th century. Word painting was developing at that time (see ACJ 6060 and ACJ 6071) and it illustrated madrigals.
“Dans le serein de sa jumelle flamme” is a sonnet by Pierre de Ronsard. The meaning of the text and the prosody are respected by contrast effects. The number of voices alternates with counterpoint and homophony. The poet’s wonder is present all along the song for the greatest enjoyment.
