Works by Lobo de Mesquita (1746-1805), restitution by Maria Ines Guimaraes: Office, Passion and Mass for Palm Sunday for SATB 4 parts mixed choir and small instrumental ensemble (two horns, violin 1, violin 2, cello, continuo)
Lobo de Mesquita is considered one of the greatest composers of religious music in Minas Gerais, a region of Brazil, during the colonial era. Yet the Office and Mass containing the St. Matthew Passion written for Palm Sunday, dated 1782, is one of the few pieces by Lobo de Mesquita whose autograph has been found. Until the present edition, this important work has remained unpublished.
This score is appropriate for almost any choir: harmonic style, no solfeggio or rhythmic difficulties. The originality of this Mass also resides in the fact that it is written for strings and 2 horns: the limited number of players avoids major instrumental investments.
Available formats: Score (Conductor), Choir part, Choir + basso continuo, and instruments parts: horns 1 and 2, violin 1, violin 2, cello.
Choirs will be able to perform this work as they see fit: either excerpts only, or the Propre of the Mass alone, or simply the Passion, or, of course, the entire work.
