The strophic structure of this song is similar to the structure “voix-de-ville” of the second half of the 16th century. The famous melody is sung by the superius in virelai. It was often used as a monody in the Manuscrit de Bayeux. That’s why the modal aspect is kept in the melody instead of the E flat usually used in the contemporary versions.
