Jacques Charpentier is one of the greatest composers of our time. He was born in 1933. He studied the piano and composition, and then he travelled to India. He worked with Olivier Messiaen and T. Aubin at the Conservatoire de Paris. He was named principal inspector of music in 1996 and was a Music director at the Ministry of Culture, and then he was a Music director for Nice, France. He works with the Cité de la Musique in Marseille. These four hymns to the Virgin Mary are very difficult and can only be performed by choirs with great experience of choral singing.
