These are popular songs from the south of France. “Magali” is based on “Mirèio” (Mireille), a poem by Frédéric Mistral. “Se canto” is sometimes sung in Provence but, it is fairer attributed to Languedoc-Roussillon and Pyrenees. Roger Calmel cleverly transformed the two songs into one. You can intertwine original and French lyrics. The three verses of “Magali” are mentioned. You can add stanzas from “Se canto” to the sheet music.

MAGNIFICATE by Giovanni ANIMUCCIA, rendition by Jacques Barbier for four mixed a cappella voices. This short Magnificat, ideally for four mixed voices, proposes during its six polyphonic verses very different climates by the mere fact of a constant renewal of the writing: imitative cells (v.1), syllabic writing (v.3), writing in false drone (v.5), verse 7 in three voices contrasting with verse 9, denser and its cantus firmus in the second voice before the cheerful ternary of verse 11.
