Trois negro spirituals
“The Gospel Train,” “Deep River,” and “Let Us Break The Bread Together”
“The Gospel Train” seems to be a religious singing to join The Gospel Train, but it was in fact a rallying call to get on “The Underground Railway,” to organize the slaves’ escape to the northern states and Canada, where there was no slavery.
The meaning of “Deep River” is the same. It was a call to sail across the “Deep River” and reach Ohio for slaves to be freed.
The text about the apostles’ acts (Acts 2:42) inspired “Let Us Break The Bread Together.” This spiritual celebrated the slaves’ spirit of sharing which was helpful to bear their awful situation.
