Composition by Jean-Marie Déodat de SÉVERAC (1872-1921), text Saint Thomas d'Aquin
Written for Corpus Christi by Saint Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274), this hymn is composed of the last two stanzas of the "Pange lingua" and is sung especially during Vespers on this feast of the Blessed Sacrament.
Jean-Marie Déodat de SÉVERAC (1872-1921) came from an old noble Languedoc family and considered himself a "country musician". He studied music at the Schola Cantorum in Paris, where he was a pupil of Vincent d'Indy and Albéric Magnard. Very attached to his roots, he escaped a certain Parisianism to write his own music, particularly for piano and organ, songs and even two operas. His most recent compositions are religious, including Tantum Ergo (1920), which is full of charm and simplicity and, while not particularly difficult either melodically or harmonically, is a joy to sing. As Claude Debussy once said: "His music smells good".
