Music by Gabriel Fauré (1845 - 1924) Poem by Théophile Gautier (1811 - 1872) - Arrangement by Philippe Douenne for 2 voices and piano.
The sailors begin by explaining that they travel the world's seas. However, they think of the land they're fleeing, of their "old mother, and young loves...”; but the "light wave” comfort them. In the end, they conclude that their existence is sublime, and that in the midst of infinity, they are walking towards God!
Written at the age of 25 by Gabriel Fauré to a poem by Théophile Gautier, this piece, dedicated to Madame Édouard Lalo, completes Opus 2, which also contains "Dans les ruines d'une abbaye”. The harmonization, easily accessible, allows any mixed-voice choir to highlight its male section.
An organist for many years, Philippe Douenne specializes in choral conducting. After learning a great deal from Éliane Lavail, particularly in terms of the quest for quality and pedagogy, he moved on to contemporary chanson with Jean-Claude Oudot and orchestral conducting with Jenö Rehak. He takes part in several master classes, mainly with Jacques Barbier, Jean-Pierre Morvan, Daïnouri Choque and William Christie.
